Members will be aware that the issue of lead shot is once again in the limelight and Defra have appointed a 'Lead Ammunition Group' to investigate. The Group, of which the GTA is a member, is to report to Defra with advice on the issues surrounding lead shot. The first meeting of the Group was held on the 26th April 2010 and the Group is to report to Defra after a year.
A press release, below, was issued after the first meeting
“John Swift chair of Lead Ammunition Group said “Our Group held its first meeting today. There was a constructive exchange of views on working practices that will be needed to carry out the tasks set out in the Group's terms of reference. The Group was in full agreement with keeping public stakeholders fully informed.
This process is still at a very early stage and the Group has a full year before making a progress report to Defra and the FSA. The first step is to look closely at the evidence, conduct a risk assessment before deciding what steps if any need to be taken.
The group plans to meet again in a month's time. You will be able to keep in touch with the work of the Group and express your opinions by means of a Group website shortly to be created.”
The GTA Council have formulated a policy for the Association and this policy is re-produced below.
The GTA is firmly of the opinion that there is already adequate legislation in place to control the use of lead in ammunition and is opposed to any further restrictions unless there is published, peer reviewed, scientific evidence appropriate to the UK proving the case.
